Message from the MPS President

Kenneth Minogue, President, MPSThe values of individual enterprise on which modern prosperity is based have now long spread beyond the Western world, and India is one of the rising powers that is contributing a new dimension to the historical process known, a little oddly, as “development.”

This regional conference of the Mont Pelerin Society will be an exchange of understandings between the idea of free exchange on the one hand, and on the other hand, the practices of a vital civilisation, many of which will inevitably modify how we understand modernity. I am looking forward to a very stimulating exchange of ideas.

President, Mont Pelerin Society

Message from the Chairman of the Organising Committee

Parth J Shah, President, Centre for Civil Society, IndiaCentre for Civil Society (CCS) welcomes all MPS members, guests and fellows to the 2011 Mont Pelerin Society Asia Regional Meeting in India.

The conference is titled ‘India as Global Power: Practicing Liberal Values at Home and Abroad’.

India is widely seen as an emerging global superpower—its economy has proven to be robust during the recent global downturn, the nuclear deal has given a special global status and the US has come to see it as a friend in Asia (though not in the world), the EU desires larger role for it, and people around the world respect it as an ancient civilization with great cultural and religious diversity, based on non-violence, tolerance, and spirituality. The MPS Regional Meeting will address three broad issues on the theme of India’s potential emergence as global power and the practice of liberal values. Though the questions are couched in reference to India, most of the issues have international dimension and relevance.

  1. What are the internal challenges India still confronts in realising her dream of a super power?
  2. How should India engage regionally and internationally?
  3. Would India bring any different approach to the working of the international system and the role of a global power?

All the details you may need for registration, accommodation and general information are available on this website. You can also contact us at mpsindia@ccs.in
