Parth J Shah, Founder President of Centre for Civil Society (CCS)

Parth received his B Pharm from M S University, Baroda, and Ph D in economics (with an emphasis on Austrian Political Economy) from Auburn University in the USA. He taught economics at the University of Michigan at Dearborn before returning to India to start the Centre for Civil Society in 1997.

Parth’s research and advocacy work centres on the themes of economic freedom, choice and competition in education, property right approach for the environment, and good governance. He has conceptualised and organised liberal educational programs for the Indian youth including Liberty & Society Seminars, Jeevika Livelihood Documentary Competition, and Researching Reality Internship Program.

Parth is on the editorial board of Education World, Vishleshan, and Khoj, and is informal advisor to many non-profits. He is the youngest Indian member of the Mont Pelerin Society.

Deepak Lal, President of Mont Pelerin Society

British development economist of Indian origin He graduated in History from Delhi University’s St. Stephens College in 1959; later at Jesus College, Oxford he received the B.A. (Honours) degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1962, and the B. Phil in Economics in 1965. He held academic positions at Oxford and later University College London.

His most noted book is perhaps the polemical The Poverty of “Development Economics” and more recent books and articles on development economics include Unintended Consequences: The Impact of Factor Endowments, Culture, and Politics on Long-Run Economic Performance.

Isher Judge Ahluwalia, Visiting professor in Maryland School of Public Affairs

She holds a B.A. with Honors from Presidency College, Kolkata, University of Calcutta and, an M.A. from Delhi School of Economics and a Ph.D. from MIT. She has been the Chairperson of Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) from 2005. As a visiting professor, she teaches courses in the fields of macroeconomics, international economic policy, and international economic development. Dr. Ahluwalia has published many articles in professional journals and also engaged actively in policy debate in India through writing in newspapers and magazines and participating in discussions in the electronic media.

Nand Kishore Singh (N. K. Singh), Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha

He did his Master’s Degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. He was teaching Economics at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. He entered IAS in 1964.

Singh has held various positions at national and state level. He has been among country’s top bureaucrats and handled assignments of national importance such as India’s Finance Secretary, Member Planning Commission and Principal Secretary to PM. He is known for his international connections and social networking with corporate giants such as Sunil Mittal, Mukesh Ambani, Anil Ambani and L N Mittal.

Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President of the Center for Policy Research

Mehta obtained a B.A. from St John’s College, Oxford in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and a Ph.D in Politics from Princeton University. Mehta has also done extensive public policy work. He was Member of the Supreme Court appointed Lyngdoh Committee on Indian Universities and has authored a number of reports for leading Government of India and International Agencies. Mehta has published widely in the fields of political theory, intellectual history, constitutional law, politics and society in India and international politics.

Rakesh Wadhwa, Executive Director, The Everest Hotel, Kathmandu

He attended Shri Ram School for Commerce. He soon gave that up to attend the evening classes in Delhi University. He is an economist and a proponent of free markets. Many of his articles have been published in the Himalayan Times. His articles have also appeared in the Economic Times (India), Times of India, Daily News (Sri Lanka), Asian Age, & Fresno Bee (US). He uses simple day to day instances to explain the concepts free market, capitalism etc. He’s written extensively on education system of India.

Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar, Consulting Editor of The Economic Times

An alumnus of The Doon School and St Stephen’s College, he earned a master’s degree in economics from Magdalen College, Oxford. He is also a research fellow at the Cato Institute, a prominent libertarian think-tank in Washington DC, and an occasional media consultant to the World Bank. Swaminathan Aiyar writes a popular weekly column titled, “Swaminomics” in the Times of India where he discusses economic and political issues pertaining to India and the world. Aiyar has prepared several reports and papers for the World Bank. He was also, in 1976-85 and 1990–98, the India correspondent of The Economist.

Surjit Bhalla, Managing Director of Oxus Research and Investments

Oxus is a New Delhi-based economic research, asset management, and emerging-markets advisory firm. He taught at the Delhi School of Economics and worked at the Rand Corporation, the Brookings Institution, and at both the research and treasury departments of the World Bank. He is author of Imagine There’s No Country: Poverty, Inequality, and Growth in the Era of Globalization (2002). His research interests are fiscal policy (flat tax?), economic history (do institutions cause growth?), and macroeconomic policy (the role of exchange rates in economic development).He is also a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines on economics, politics, and cricket
